Each character has unique statistics for speed, turning, and power. There are eight characters to choose from (one of which is initially locked) and several courses. These are primarily used to qualify for tournaments. The Extreme Winners Cup is the primary game mode, which includes cross races, slalom, one-on-one, and time attacks. It was a first for the series, combining skiing and snowboarding, as seen in the arcade game Alpine Surfer.
The features and game modes are unlikely identical to those in the Alpine Racer 3 arcade game. This is the first game in the series to be released on a console. It is based on the arcade Alpine Racer series, played on a cabinet with the player standing on a set of ski-like foot stands that move horizontally to steer and take corners while holding onto two bars for stability. You'll need all your concentration as you hurtle downhill at blistering speeds, trying to pick the right racing lines and master the bends and jumps but you'll be pleased to know there's a context sensitive commentary to let you know exactly how well you're doing.Alpine Racer 3 is a game about downhill skiing. And if that's not enough, there's also a mind-blowing, futuristic man-made course to really test your abilities.Each course is packed with trackside objects and obstacles that can help or hinder your progress, and you'll even find that weather conditions vary from one run to the next, from clear, bright sunshine to biting blizzards and even the occasional plume of snow from an avalanche. As you hurl yourself off near-vertical drops and lean at seemingly-impossible angles into yet another sharply-cambered bend, with the safety netting flapping in the periphery of your vision, you may just about find time to recognise the runs from the arcade original - as well as many more, created specially for this version.
